History of Hair Removal

The desire to be hairless dates back to prehistoric times, which is why the most painful methods of hair removal have been developed over the centuries. The obsession with having hairless smooth skin began around 3000 BC thanks to the Greeks and their obsession with having hairless smooth skin. Being hairless may seem like a fairly modern ideal for fashion, sexual desire and even female oppression, but in fact it started long before that.

Over the ages, humans have removed unwanted hair in many different ways, from shaving with sharp flint to pulling out hair from the scalp with tweezers. For both sexes, hair removal has been a fundamental pillar of beauty regimens throughout history.

During the ancient Greek era: the Greeks were fixated on maintaining a marble appearance, and they would even resort to painful methods for removing unwanted hair. The Greeks used sharp rocks to shave off body and facial hair that was above the level of the skin. An alternative method was to use two shells pressed together in order to pull the hair from its roots. In some Greek communities, hair eliminating creams inundated the skin with dangerous chemicals, causing it to become raw, irritated, and susceptible to infections; hair was symbolic of enslavement and poverty, so hairlessness was important for people of power and wealth.

During the Ancient Egyptians Era: The Egyptians were notably known for their luxurious style and extraordinary rituals; in fact, they were perhaps the most committed to removing and shaving their body and facial hair for religious or ritualistic purposes. The women of ancient Egypt used a sticky wax to remove the hair from the roots of their body and head hair, using tweezers or honey to do so. The wax was a natural and effective product that consisted of sugar or bees wax as its main ingredient.

During the Elizabethan Era: During the 1500s, Queen Elizabeth had a powerful reign, and her unique style of having a wide forehead set quite a trend for Elizabethan women. Women began plucking their eyebrows and had high foreheads as the fashion. Women would soak bandages in a mixture of cat’s feces, walnut oil, and vinegar to inhibit hair growth on their foreheads. Although this may seem crazy, mothers used the concoction on their children’s foreheads to discourage hair growth.

During 1800’s- mid 1900’s:  During the Industrial Revolution, shaving became a convenience for men that allowed them to shave at home and at their own convenience. It was also cheaper than visiting the local barber for a shave. During this period, lady shavers were introduced and subsequently became an integral part of women’s beauty regimens, razor companies pushed the marketing theme of hair being unhygienic, which proved a natural boost for women to have clean arms and legs.

Today Modern Era: Hair removal has persisted in society with fashion, beauty, and hygiene being the main factors for hair free skin. Although the traditional methods of waxing, shaving, and plucking continue, technology has allowed us to attain permanent hair removal without surgery with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).

One device which provides such luxury is the Peleva ICE Laser Hair Removal Pro home hair removal device for the body and face. In the decades since light therapy was introduced decades ago, IPL has revolutionized the way we remove our hair.

How does IPL work?

Designed to break the cycle of hair growth, Peleva ICE Laser Hair Removal Pro is used to prevent unwanted hair growth.

  1. Upon being absorbed through the skin, light energy is transferred into the hair shaft where it is absorbed by the melanin.
  2. The absorbed light energy is converted to heat energy (below the surface of the skin), which disables the hair follicle preventing further growth.
  3. Hairs treated with this treatment are normally shed over the next few days to 1-2 weeks.

Treatment Regime:

The removal of unwanted hair on a daily or weekly basis is another part of our beauty regime, however Peleva ICE Laser Hair Removal Pro recommends a 12 week regimen followed by monthly maintenance treatments as and when needed. There is no better way for permanent hair reduction than these regimens.
